Emerging Retail Experience in India - Wayside Amenities

#

India’s highways are undergoing a transformation—from transport corridors to thriving lifestyle zones. At the heart of this change are Way-Side Amenities (WSAs): thoughtfully designed hubs offering food, fuel, rest, and retail along the country’s expanding 150,000 km highway network.

Driven by rising car ownership, road travel has become the preferred mode of transport for millions. In response, WSAs are evolving beyond basic stops to deliver a curated travel experience. Think hygienic eateries featuring local and global cuisine, EV-ready fuel stations, clean restrooms, shaded relaxation zones, lodging, medical aid, and secure parking every 40 to 60 km.

Recognizing this shift, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) aims to establish 1,000+ WSAs by 2030, with most developed through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). With high footfall, strategic locations, and strong government backing, returns are estimated between 15 - 30%, making WSAs a high-potential investment.

Globally, rest stops occur every 25–35 km and India is catching up fast. As highways evolve into economic and tourism corridors, At the intersection of mobility and opportunity, WSAs are shaping the future of travel where every stop fuels both journeys and economic growth in a dynamic, evolving India.
